HISTORY OF THEATRE

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements and positions important to creating theatre by taking a quiz and by participating in various learning activities.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of composition and the 9 elements of Viewpoints by performing group compositions.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of Uta Hagen’s Object Exercise by incorporating five of the ten exercises in a contentless scene.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of oppression, empathy, Boal techniques by creating and participating in Forum Theatre scenes.

Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of theatre history by participating in various activities, quizzes, and a timeline.

Students will demonstrate… Expanded thinking about the impact of Shakespeare’s works and performance practices of the past and present; The development of analytical and performance tools to help effectively understand and perform Shakespeare; The process of creating a unified, polished piece; by creating and performing a monologue or scene for a Shakespeare performance showcase

Students will show their understanding about how American Playwrights shape theatre by completing a presentation that shows why their assigned playwright is the Greatest American Playwright.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of different cultures in Utah as they compare and contrast their own cultures to those within the communities.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding and exploration of Stanislavsky’s foundational acting system elements by incorporating them in a monologue or scene performance.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of Spanish Golden Age theatre by exploring Spanish life and conventions of the time and performing a scene from a Spanish Golden Age play.

Objective: Students will demonstrate an understanding of theatre for social change by performing an adapted fairytale that targets problems elementary students face.

Unit objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to honestly communicate in a Shakespeare scene by applying principles of acting/theatre including objectives, tactics, communication, vocal colors, and story arc in a performance of the Shakespeare scene.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate their growing understanding of Shakespeare’s plays and the play’s significance in our modern day world and basic Shakespearian acting techniques of vocal levels, punctuation, word coloring, and rhythm by taking a quiz and performing a 16 line Shakespeare monologue.

Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of Roman society, The Manaechmi, and PSA structure by performing in a PSA they wrote in groups using the dialogue in The Manaechmi and their own words as well.

Unit Objective: Students will be able to identify many playwrights of the dramatic canon, as well as some of their most influential works by participating in research and analysis about the individual and performing one of their most famous works. Students will also broaden their understanding of playwriting and what makes a playwright by briefly researching some contemporary performance groups, and participating in contemporary performance practices/playwriting.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of musical theatre pedagogy by researching current practices, applying various vocal, dance, and acting techniques, and either performing a solo musical scene or doing a presentation on an influential musical in PechaKucha form.

Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of Medieval Theatre, playwriting, and getting a play up on its feet by participating in discussions, taking a quiz, writing a play, and performing a play.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate an understanding of dramaturgy by selecting a script and creating a casebook of supplemental materials and research for that show.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of Greek theatre practices and style by participating in various exercises and culminating in a performance in the Greek style.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of French Neoclassical playwriting by taking a comprehensive assessment and stage reading their final script.

Unit Objective: Students will understand the ways in which theatre can be used to create a forum for discussion by participating in Boal’s Forum Theatre Exercises and preparing a workshop to conduct for their peers.

UNIT OBJECTIVE: Students will demonstrate their ability to incorporate Japanese theatrical elements into an American Realism monologue by performing that monologue for the class.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their ability to understand devised theatre and its process by creating a devised theatre piece to tour to elementary schools.

Unit Objective: Students will understand the conventions of the Commedia Dell’Arte time period by performing in an improvised scenario.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of Brechtian theatre techniques by creating and presenting a concept for a play they could direct in a Brechtian style.

Unit Objective - Students will be able to express a knowledge of Greek Theatre History and its influence on theatre today by performing in a scene from Medea with Greek theatre elements for a classroom dramatic festival. **This unit is built around the textbook of “History of the Theatre” by Oscar Brockett (10th Edition)

Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of different acting methods by presenting a 2 minute scene using one acting technique and writing a 1-2 page paper outlining the pros and cons of different acting methods.

Student will demonstrate an understanding of Shakespearean Texts by scanning and performing William Shakespeare’s Crispian Speech and cold reading a Shakespeare scene.
