TECH DESIGN

Units

Curriculum units under “Tech Design” fall under specific technical theatre topics such as costuming, makeup, lights, sound, props, and scenic design as well as general theatre production jobs.  Focus is on understanding and design of specific tech theatre elements.

Understanding Set Design by Katie Hatfield

Students will demonstrate their ability to think and work as designers as they interpret and create set designs for a particular scene of a play.

Technical Theatre + Design by Summer Lewis & Carolyn Pedersen

Objective: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements of technical theatre design by completing projects in each element, creating a group skit demonstrating technical elements, and a final written test.

Sound Design: the Art of Foley by Caitlin Hall

Students will demonstrate their mastery of sound and the creation of sound by adapting and performing a scene from A Midsummer Night’s Dream using live sound effects.

Sound Design in a Production by Mara Hinton

Objective: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the use of sound in a production by designing the sound for the production "You Can’t Take It With You".

Scenic Painting by Hillary Carey

Objective: Students will demonstrate their scenic painting skills by painting various surfaces and creating a final project incorporating the skills they have learned.

Makeup by Jessica Johnson

Educational Objective: Students will demonstrate their ability to design and executing old age makeup, stylized makeup and wound makeup.

Lighting Purposes by Hailey Morey

Description: This is a three-lesson mini-unit that was taught the couple days before a beginning Stage Tech class went into the auditorium to learn how to hang lights, work the light board, and gel the lights. While it is not a full-length unit, these three lessons could be inserted into a Stage Tech class at any time when the class is not building, etc.

Students will be able to demonstrate the understanding of lighting principles by designing a light plot for a production.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate an understanding of dramaturgy by selecting a script and creating a casebook of supplemental materials and research for that show.

UNIT OBJECTIVE: The students will demonstrate their directing skills by creating a director’s book and directing a one-act play of their choice.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their ability to design a set by compiling and presenting a set design project for a scene.

Objective: Students will demonstrate an understanding of costuming by designing the costume for one character in a play or musical and by presenting a research project.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of the elements of design and the design process by creating/presenting a finished set design model.

Color Theory by Caitlin Cotten

Students will demonstrate their understanding of basic color theory and the effects on the audience of color on stage by completing a color wheel, identifying emotional connotations/communication of color on stage and creating a basic color scheme for the play The Rainmaker.

Objective: The students will demonstrate their ability to communicate certain traits of a character through the design of a costume by designing a costume for a Shakespearean character.
