CHARACTERIZATION

Students will demonstrate their understanding of voice as a tool for character development by creating character voices and creating a cartoon in a small group project.

Unit Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of voice and diction by developing. They will represent at least 2 different characters in a radio program, using all 4 vocal variations (tempo, pitch, tone and volume), diction and projection.

Students will demonstrate their ability to create a voice for a character by creating podcasts in small groups.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate appropriate, creative use of their voices and bodies to create characters.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of vocal techniques by preparing, recording, and sharing a radio broadcast script.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of script analysis and characterization by performing a scene from The Curious Savage.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of different cultures in Utah as they compare and contrast their own cultures to those within the communities.

Students will demonstrate their ability to manipulate voice to clearly portray an objective-driven character through the design and development of a puppet character in a short scene.

Unit Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate character development and exploration by stepping into role as the superhero characters they have created on paper, utilizing tactics and objectives.

Unit Objective: Students will share their ability to tell a convincing and entertaining beginning-level story by telling to an elementary-aged audience and by first auditioning for the teacher.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of nonverbal communication by planning, recording, and presenting silent films.

Students will be able to make believable and authentic acting choices in scenes by analyzing the script text and exploring appropriate vocality, movement, and motivations.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their ability to develop a character voice in addition to using a puppet by making a sock puppet and performing a puppet show using an original script they have written.

Unit Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to craft a storyline and convey physicality and emotion by performing an original duo-pantomime scene.

Description: This unit was created for an Improvisation class; students grades 9-12. No previous experience necessary. All lessons are 55 minutes long. This unit takes place after the students have had units on the basics of storytelling, the basics of characterization, and open scenes. The students have skills in creating sound effects, showing characters, and creating scenes with basic scripted elements already there. Up until this point, they have only worked in a theatre-in-the-round setting with improv games.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate their ability to use vocal variety and techniques by performing a few different styles of lip sync.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of the basic elements of how characterization (including language and physicality) affects creating a storyline by performing a group scene.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of interpretation in a personal narrative by writing a detailed narrative based on a given image and presenting their work in character.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of acting foundations by application to an informal performance of a contemporary scene with a partner.

Unit Objective: Students will be able to perform as a specific character by participating in numerous character-building activities and by performing as the character in a character picnic performance.

Students will demonstrate their ability to create a character by exploring character development activities and exercises.

Students will be able to create a solid three-dimensional historical character using movement, expression, voice, and more by interacting with other characters in a 30-minute improved performance at the end of the unit.

Students will be able to perform controlled subtle and exaggerated movement by devising puppet scene using Bunraku Puppets and principles.

Objective: Students will be able to fight for an objective using tactics by creating characters and performing in rehearsed improv activities, culminating in an Ambiguous Scene performance.
