Units

Curriculum units under “Characterization” focus on creating a solid character for the stage.  Instructional strategies, activities and exercises allow for much diversity in style and product for the characterization study.

Voicing Your Own Cartoon by Meredith Campbell

Students will demonstrate their understanding of voice as a tool for character development by creating character voices and creating a cartoon in a small group project.

Voice/Diction by Polly K. Dunn

Unit Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of voice and diction by developing. They will represent at least 2 different characters in a radio program, using all 4 vocal variations (tempo, pitch, tone and volume), diction and projection.

Long Form Improvisation by Lela Kovalenko Bayne

Description: This unit was created for an Improvisation class; students grades 9-12. No previous experience necessary. All lessons are 55 minutes long. This unit takes place after the students have had units on the basics of storytelling, the basics of characterization, and open scenes. The students have skills in creating sound effects, showing characters, and creating scenes with basic scripted elements already there. Up until this point, they have only worked in a theatre-in-the-round setting with improv games.
