ACTING SKILLS

Units

Curriculum units in “Acting Skills” focus on a variety of different skills and techniques that benefit any actor.  Topics include voice and diction, improvisation, specific acting styles and methods, fourth wall, relationship, objectives, etc.   Some of the units build to a specific product, but most can be used to build to whatever the theatre program and teacher desires.

Voicing Your Own Cartoon by Meredith Campbell

Students will demonstrate their understanding of voice as a tool for character development by creating character voices and creating a cartoon in a small group project.

Voice/Diction by Polly K. Dunn

Unit Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of voice and diction by developing. They will represent at least 2 different characters in a radio program, using all 4 vocal variations (tempo, pitch, tone and volume), diction and projection.

The students will demonstrate their ability to apply the vocal viewpoints to portray character, emotion, location, and story/plot by performing a reading of a children’s storybook.

Students will demonstrate their understanding of oppression, empathy, Boal techniques by creating and participating in Forum Theatre scenes.

The Voice of the Puppet by Megan Michaels

Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of vocal qualities (rate, pitch, tone, diction, and projection) by designing a unique voice for a puppet and performing in an original, rehearsed puppet show.

Unit objective: Students will be able to demonstrate their ability to honestly communicate in a Shakespeare scene by applying principles of acting/theatre including objectives, tactics, communication, vocal colors, and story arc in a performance of the Shakespeare scene.

Unit Objective: Students will demonstrate their growing understanding of Shakespeare’s plays and the play’s significance in our modern day world and basic Shakespearian acting techniques of vocal levels, punctuation, word coloring, and rhythm by taking a quiz and performing a 16 line Shakespeare monologue.

Students will be able to make believable and authentic acting choices in scenes by analyzing the script text and exploring appropriate vocality, movement, and motivations.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their ability to develop a character voice in addition to using a puppet by making a sock puppet and performing a puppet show using an original script they have written.

Playwrights and Contemporary Performance Practices by Laura Taylor

Unit Objective: Students will be able to identify many playwrights of the dramatic canon, as well as some of their most influential works by participating in research and analysis about the individual and performing one of their most famous works. Students will also broaden their understanding of playwriting and what makes a playwright by briefly researching some contemporary performance groups, and participating in contemporary performance practices/playwriting.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of musical theatre pedagogy by researching current practices, applying various vocal, dance, and acting techniques, and either performing a solo musical scene or doing a presentation on an influential musical in PechaKucha form.

Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of the rules of improv by participating in an improv performance/competition. Description: Students learn the rules and guidelines for improv as well as several performance type improv games. Unit culminates in a "Comedy Sportz" type game.
