Focus and Concentration (First Unit of Beginning Theatre)

Objective:

Students will demonstrate knowledge of the elements of focus and their ability to focus on stage by performing an improvised scene.

1994 National Standards:

CONTENT STANDARD 2: Acting by developing, communicating, and sustaining characters in improvisations and informal or formal productions.

 

CONTENT STANDARD 7: Analyzing, critiquing, and constructing meanings from informal and formal theatre, film, television, and electronic media productions.

 

Description:

Students are introduced to drama class and basic theater elements. They learn elements of and practice focus.

 

Lesson Plans

Lesson 1: Introduction to Theatre Course
Students will become familiar with one another and classroom procedures/expectations by participating in getting-to-know-you activities and discussing the disclosure document.

 

Lesson 2: Teamwork and watching
Students will be able to work as a team by participating in a sculpted tableau performance exercise.

 

Lesson 3: Listening and feeling
Students will demonstrate their ability to listen as a means of focus by participating in a series of listening activities.

 

Lesson 4: Identifying Focus in Performance
Students will be able to identify the different types of focus (watching, listening, feeling, and teamwork) by analyzing a short film clip.

 

Lesson 5: Focus in our Everyday Lives
Students will be able to mimic focus by observing and then physically performing as a person that they observed.

 

Lesson 6: Final Focus/Concentration
The students will demonstrate their ability to focus by performing an improvised group scene.
