Dramaturgy

Objective:

Students will demonstrate their understanding of Dramaturgy by leading a research-based discussion on either a scene or a film clip.

 

Class Level:

Intermediate with 90-minute class periods

 

Main Concepts:

Appreciation, Research, Design, Leadership, presentation

 

1994 National Standards:

CONTENT STANDARD 4: Directing by interpreting dramatic texts and organizing and conducting rehearsals for informal or formal productions.
CONTENT STANDARD 5: Researching by evaluating and synthesizing cultural and historical information to support artistic choices.

 

Prior Knowledge:

Students must have a grasp on play analysis and a common understanding of a play (example used in the unit is Romeo and Juliet).

 

Lesson Plans

Lesson 1: Introduction to Dramaturgy/Research
Students will demonstrate their understanding of who a Dramaturg is by sharing research done on a film clip.

 

Lesson 2: Research Continued
Students will demonstrate the skills of research needed in a dramaturgical setting by competing in an information scavenger hunt.

 

Lesson 3: Counter text
Students will demonstrate their understanding of the concept of counter text by selecting a counter text to go with Romeo and Juliet

 

Lesson 4: Critical Thinking/ Script Development/ Leading discussions
Students will demonstrate the skills of critical thinking by participating in an verbal analysis of a new script by ____________ (guest playwright).

 

Lesson 5: Visual Design
Students will demonstrate their understanding of visual elements by creating a lobby display for Romeo and Juliet.

 

Lesson 6: Talkback Days
Students will demonstrate their understanding of dramaturgy by leading a talkback session for a film.
