How can you communicate your emotions in different ways?<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Materials:<\/strong> \u201cSuccessful Pancakes\u201d by Charles Wilkins<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hook:<\/strong> Making the Batter &#8211; Tell students that they will all be assisting in making pancake batter. \u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What ingredients do you need for pancake batter?<\/li>\n<li>Put in the eggs, flour, milk, chocolate chips\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Give it a good mix<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once the batter is made, tell the students that we\u2019re going to learn how to make the \u201cbest\u201d pancakes. \u00a0Because, \u201cthere\u2019s a trick to making pancakes\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Activity:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read through the poem &#8216;Successful Pancakes&#8217; one time<\/p>\n<p>Have students find their own space<\/p>\n<p>Poem 2nd time<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe trick is this, to flatten them as flat as they will go.\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>How can you be as flat as a pancake?<\/li>\n<li>How do you feel as a pancake? (Actually ask and wait for a response)\n<ul>\n<li>Can you show me how you feel?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Do you like being a pancake?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u201cHit &#8217;em with a dictionary, Hit &#8217;em with a ski. Hit &#8217;em with an elephant, Hit &#8217;em with a tree.\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>How can you show that you are using a dictionary? Is it heavy? How big is it?<\/li>\n<li>Now it is ski,\n<ul>\n<li>how is it different from a dictionary?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Try flattening it with an elephant.\n<ul>\n<li>How big is an elephant?!<\/li>\n<li>What sound does it make when you pick it up?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Last, you hit it with a tree.\n<ul>\n<li>What kind of tree are you using?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Now what if you are the pancake getting hit with all of these things\n<ul>\n<li>How do you feel?<\/li>\n<li>Does it hurt?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t think the pancakes are as flat as they can be. Can we all work together to flatten the pancake with dictionaries, skies, elephants, and trees?\n<ul>\n<li>Pick your object and let\u2019s take turns flattening the pancake in the middle of the room<\/li>\n<li>Now go back to your personal pancakes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u201cflatter than a splisher, flatter than a splat, flatter than a pancake, flat, flat, FLAT.\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>Wow class, thank you for working together to make the pancake flat, flat, FLAT!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Now, \u201cThrow &#8217;em in the frying pan.\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>What sound to they make when they hit the pan?<\/li>\n<li>What color are they?<\/li>\n<li>What does it smell like? Can you show me what they smell like?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFlip them on their back\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>Can you flip the pancake? Is it tricky? Is it easy? How big is the pancake?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u201cCook &#8217;em till you think they&#8217;re done\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>How do you know when they are done?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>\u201cand throw &#8217;em down the hatch.\u201d\n<ul>\n<li>Eat up the pancake!<\/li>\n<li>How are you eating it? With your hands, fork, spoon? Do you eat it fast or enjoy it slowly?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Assessment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Discussion<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How did you feel as the pancake? How did you show it?<\/li>\n<li>How did you show the difference between the different ways to flatten the pancake?<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes we need to work together to do hard things.
