{"id":1207,"date":"2015-03-16T19:43:02","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T19:43:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tedb-wp.byu.edu\/?page_id=1207"},"modified":"2015-05-15T19:30:03","modified_gmt":"2015-05-15T19:30:03","slug":"actor-versus-character","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?p=1207","title":{"rendered":"Actor versus Character"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Objective<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Students will demonstrate an understanding of relating to their character by performing a short piece both as themselves and their character.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Materials Needed<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Clip 1: clip from a movie; Clip 2: different movie with same actor in Clip 1, yet portraying a very different character; Clip 3: clip of actor as himself (i.e. on a talk show or interview)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Lesson Directions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Show Clip 1. Then Clip 2. And finally Clip 3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Compare and contrast the actor to the different characters he portrayed. Discuss the differences and similarities of both.\u00a0 Could you see inspiration of the character in the actual person?\u00a0 Were there any characteristics that showed up in all three clips?\u00a0 How can actors USE THEMSELVES in a character they are performing?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have the students look at their own character and themselves and ask:<\/p>\n<p>1-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How am I the same as my character?<\/p>\n<p>2-\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How am I different from my character?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have them get out a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle of the paper vertically.\u00a0 Have them label on side as \u201cMe\u201d and the other as their character\u2019s name (i.e. Felix Ungerman).\u00a0 Have them write down physical, mental, emotional, etc. characteristics for both themselves and their character in the proper columns.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have them share their findings with a partner.\u00a0 They can share three things that they\u2019ve written down, and then share the biggest difference between themselves and their character along with 1-2 ways that their character is similar.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After identifying an everyday routine (i.e. making their bed, doing homework, etc.), have the students create a simple 30-60 second piece that portrays them doing the task <em>as themselves.\u00a0<\/em>Then have the students adapt their scene so that it is\u00a0<em>their character\u00a0<\/em>that is performing the task<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>(Students could also work with another student in a short improv scene.
