Revise and improve an improvised or scripted drama\/theatre work through repetition and collaborative review.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>TH:Pr4.1.4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b. Make physical choices to develop a character in a drama\/theatre work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>TH:Pr6.1.4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a. Share small-group drama\/theatre work, with peers as audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Materials:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Printed lesson plan, so you can access the short story reading<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Warm-Ups:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (5-10 min)<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limb shaking countdown<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have the students find their own standing place in the room then turn so they\u2019re facing you as you stand in the front of the room.\u00a0 They need enough room that they can stretch out their arms and not touch anyone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shake your left hand 10 times, right hand 10 times, left leg 10 times, right leg 10 times. In the same order, shake each limb again, but 9 times, then 8, all the way to 1 time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget to shake out the face! Start by scrunching up your face for 10 seconds, as tight as you can. It should look like you just tasted something sour.\u00a0 Tighten your eyes, mouth, nose\u2026 Then make everything as wide as you can! Open up your eyes, mouth, nose, lift your eyebrows\u2026It\u2019s like you just had the biggest surprise of your life! Hold for 10 seconds. Go back and forth between scrunched and open, then shake it out.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Hook:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinochio activity<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have the students stay in their standing space in the room. The teacher will give the following instructions from the front of the room, observing the students as they do the activity. The teaching partners can walk amongst the students to ensure that everyone is following directions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re going to do an activity to help us be super aware of our bodies and how they move.\u00a0 To start, you have to stand as still as a statue, like you&#8217;re made completely of wood.\u00a0 Your arms and legs are carved from a single piece of wood.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have the teacher show how they want the students to stand.\u00a0 It should be in an upright position with arms folded in front of them, facing forward.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You <\/span><b>can&#8217;t move<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> any part of yourself at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the magic spell has begun.\u00a0 It begins at the top of your head.\u00a0 The spell moves down slowly until your head down to your <\/span><b>eyebrows <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is flesh and blood.\u00a0 Try and move your eyebrows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spell keeps moving down.\u00a0 Now you can move your <\/span><b>eyes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!\u00a0 All your life you&#8217;ve been staring straight ahead, and now you can look to the sides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spell gets to your <\/span><b>ears <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and your <\/span><b>nose<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 See if you can wiggle them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spell gets to your <\/span><b>mouth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 You can smile.\u00a0 It feels strange at first, and probably looks pretty strange too, but you grow more comfortable with it.\u00a0 Try some other facial expressions as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowly you discover that you can<\/span><b> turn your head<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Careful!\u00a0 You can look up and down carefully as well.\u00a0 Look!\u00a0 You have feet!\u00a0 This is the first time you were ever sure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spell reaches your <\/span><b>shoulders<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 But remember, your arms and hands are still attached to your torso, since you are carved from a single piece of wood, so you can move ONLY your shoulders.\u00a0 Try some circles.\u00a0 Do you feel a tingle up and down your spine?\u00a0 That&#8217;s the magic working.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spell reaches your <\/span><b>chest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 You can puff it out like a soldier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your <\/span><b>elbows <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can move now, but still not your hands.\u00a0 As the spell goes lower, see if you can pull your <\/span><b>left hand <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">away from your body.\u00a0 Ooofff!\u00a0 You did it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring your hand up to your face and study it.\u00a0 See if you can move the <\/span><b>fingers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 How does that feel?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See if you can get your <\/span><b>right hand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> free as well.\u00a0 Does it move too?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spell has reached your <\/span><b>waist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Carefully bend forward, to the side.\u00a0 See if you bend backwards.\u00a0 See if you can make a circle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spell reaches your <\/span><b>hips<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but your knees are still locked together and your feet are still attached to your pedestal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spell gets to your <\/span><b>knees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 See if they bend!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reach down and see if you can pull your <\/span><b>left foot free.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Ooofff!\u00a0 Point the toe.\u00a0 Flex the foot.\u00a0 Make little circles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now see if you can get your <\/span><b>right foot free.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>You&#8217;re all real now! <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0See how you can move.\u00a0 Careful at first&#8211;these are your first steps!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the activity is finished, ask the students what discoveries they made? What did it feel like to be super aware of their bodies and how they moved? Did they find a new way of moving a body part as they focused on it? What did it feel like to only move their face? What did their bodies communicate with these movements?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s find all the ways our new bodies move!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Lesson:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Step 1: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Introduction to instructors and students\/establishing expectations<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the previous activity finishes, gather the students together into a large circle so everyone can see each other.\u00a0 The teachers will then introduce themselves as well as get to know the students.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hello everyone, my name is Becca, and this is Emily.\u00a0 We\u2019re from BYU and will be here for the next few weeks.\u00a0 We have another teacher, Pollyanna, who will be joining us next week. We\u2019re excited to be here! While we\u2019re here, we expect you to be respectful, listen when we\u2019re talking, raise your hand if you have something to share, and participate as best you can in all the activities we do.\u00a0 If there\u2019s something you feel like you can\u2019t do, let us know and we\u2019ll do our best to help.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We want to get to know you a little! Let\u2019s start by going around and telling us your name.\u00a0 After you say your name, show us with your face how you\u2019re feeling right now. For example, my name is Becca and I\u2019m excited to be here (show excitement with facial expression.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Step 2: Introduction to lesson<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re going to be exploring different ways we communicate with one another.\u00a0 Does anyone know what \u201ccommunication\u201d means?\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible answers: Communication is how we talk to each other<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do we communicate?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible answers: verbal words, written words, body language, sign language\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today we\u2019re going to focus on our facial expressions. This means that we\u2019ll be communicating with our faces! It won\u2019t require any noise, but we\u2019ll still find ways to communicate and understand one another.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Step 3: Drama Activity<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To begin, we\u2019re going to see how well you\u2019re able to communicate different emotions. Remember, we\u2019re focusing on our faces.\u00a0 So use your mouth, eyebrows, and eyes.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While staying in the circle, call out different emotions for the class to express as a whole.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible emotions: excited, happy, sad, scared, nervous, angry, tired<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remind the students that this is a non-verbal activity if they start to get noisy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, we\u2019re going to see how our facial expressions can tell a story! We\u2019ll do a story together, then split into groups where you get to create your own stories with facial expressions.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have the students sit where they are in the circle for the following activity.\u00a0 They will do facial expressions while the teacher is reading this story. Pause occasionally to acknowledge facial expressions they do and how it helps tell the story.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a dark and stormy night. I was hiding in my bed, <\/span><b>scared <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the lighting and thunder going on outside.\u00a0 I jumped in <\/span><b>terror <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as I heard a tree scrape against the window. Suddenly there was a knock on my door. My mom came in and sat on my bed. She <\/span><b>calmed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">me down as she read me a story.\u00a0 It was a <\/span><b>funny <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">story. We <\/span><b>laughed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">together and forgot about the storm outside. When the story ended, I was so <\/span><b>tired <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that I quickly fell <\/span><b>asleep<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the class finishes doing facial expressions with the story, ask the students what words they chose to dramatize.\u00a0 What stood out to them and how did they show it on their faces?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now we\u2019re going to split the class into groups of 4.\u00a0 Your group will need to create a silent story that can be understood through your facial expressions. A story consists of a beginning, middle, and end.\u00a0 So it could be something like \u201cI walked to school in the cold snow today.\u00a0 I have lots of fun at school. I\u2019m sad when I have to leave.\u201d Emily and I will walk around and help you with your stories if you need it. Be sure each story has at least three different emotions or actions that you can show through your facial expressions.\u00a0 For example, the story we just read was scared, calm, happy\/laughing, then sleeping.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Divide the class and assist them in their stories. The teachers should take the time to watch each story and give feedback on the students clarity in facial expressions.\u00a0 If needed, have them revise their stories based on the feedback.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Step 4:<\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (optional)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there\u2019s time, have the students perform their stories for one another.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there is still extra time, create scenarios that the students can perform individually or as a group.\u00a0 The students who aren\u2019t acting will guess the scenario.\u00a0 Similar to the charades game at the beginning of class.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Assessment(s):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students will be assessed on their participation and contributions to their final stories as well as through the questions asked throughout the class.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lesson 1: Communication Through Facial Expressions Lead Teacher:\u00a0 Becca &nbsp; Lesson Objective: Students will demonstrate their understanding of communication through facial expressions as they participate in creating a story using facial expressions &nbsp; National Arts (UT Core) Standards: TH:Cr3.1.4a.
