{"id":5484,"date":"2018-05-07T21:50:13","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T21:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=5484"},"modified":"2018-05-07T21:50:13","modified_gmt":"2018-05-07T21:50:13","slug":"proper-prop-usage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=5484","title":{"rendered":"Proper Prop Usage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lesson 2: Proper Prop Usage<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Objective<\/strong>: Students will demonstrate their understanding of appropriate prop selection by identifying five props that would support the historical and cultural context of their selected production.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials Needed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Projector<\/p>\n<p>YouTube clips (see below)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hook: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Watch different versions of the song \u201cI Think I\u2019m Gonna Like It Here\u201d from <em>Annie<\/em>.\u00a0 (It isn\u2019t necessary to watch the entirety of each clip.\u00a0 Be sure to show enough so students can see that there are different props being used, even if the clip is set in the same time period [aside from 2014 version.])\u00a0 Before watching, challenge the students to make a list of as many props as they can identify in each clip.\u00a0 These lists will be used for the discussion afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>1982 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_nM_-CFRBS8\"><strong>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_nM_-CFRBS8<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1999 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-iV-pGK_YwQ\"><strong>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-iV-pGK_YwQ<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2014 &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4lTTgcTL4Xk\"><strong>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4lTTgcTL4Xk<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Follow up discussion: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using the lists the students created, compare and contrast the different versions of the same song.\u00a0 In the case of the 1982 and 1999 version, they were supposed to take place in the same time period.\u00a0 Did they succeed? What differences were found between the two older versions?\u00a0 How was the 2014 version different?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instruction:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to use appropriate props for productions.\u00a0 If something takes place around the time of the Great Depression, like <em>Annie<\/em>, then you need to be sure the telephones, cleaning supplies, and toys reflect the kind of items they\u2019d have back then.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Teach students the difference between props and set design dressing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Props are essentially anything that an actor touches or uses. A good rule of thumb is that props can usually be moved by one person.\u00a0 Like a handheld mirror, food, or cleaning supply.<\/li>\n<li>Set dressing is anything in the background.
