Lesson 1: Introduction to Dramaturgy and its Importance<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Learning Objective:<\/strong> Students will demonstrate their understanding of dramatic composition and theatrical representation as they correctly identify items that fit within the musical \u201cAladdin.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Materials needed:
\n <\/strong>– Items to hide around the room (ie: a golden lamp, a camel stuffed animal, an umbrella, a blanket, a picnic basket, a jar of sand, an Arabian costume piece, a cowboy hat\u2026 etc.\u00a0 These items should be able to be used for Aladdin as well as not.)
\n – Aladdin video clip https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NtG-s-an7Og<\/a>
\n – Aladdin PowerPoint\u00a0\u00a0Lesson 1.Aladdin<\/a>
\n – Projector<\/p>\n

Preparation:<\/strong>
\n Before students come to class, hide various random items around your classroom for a treasure hunt. Make sure these items are easily visible.\u00a0 The items will be a variety of objects, ones that could support the theatrical representation of Aladdin and ones that don\u2019t.\u00a0 This way, students will further show their understanding of dramaturgy as they select the correct items, rather than every hidden item in the classroom.<\/p>\n

Hook:<\/strong>
\n Begin class by watching the beginning of the selected clip, showing the Broadway cast of Aladdin performing \u201cArabian Nights.\u201d (https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NtG-s-an7Og<\/a> Watch until 1:42<\/strong>)
\n Before<\/u><\/strong> watching the clip, tell the students to watch for clues that help the audience know the context of the performance.\u00a0 Let them know that you\u2019ll be discussing what they see after the clip.<\/p>\n

Class discussion:<\/strong>
\n Open the discussion by asking the students to share what clues they saw that helped them know the context of the performance.
\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Possible answers:<\/strong> the movements they used (like when they had their hands together in front of them and moved their head in an Arabian way), the hair and makeup used, the fact that they were singing about an \u201cArabian night,\u201d the costumes, the style of music used\u2026 \n <\/p>\n

Instruction:<\/strong><\/p>\n

After the students have shared their observations, connect their observations to the responsibilities of a dramaturg.\u00a0<\/p>\n
