{"id":5407,"date":"2018-04-25T01:00:34","date_gmt":"2018-04-25T01:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=5407"},"modified":"2018-04-25T01:00:34","modified_gmt":"2018-04-25T01:00:34","slug":"lesson-5-or-inflections","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=5407","title":{"rendered":"Lesson 5: ?! or Inflections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lesson 5: <\/strong>?! or Inflections<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objective: <\/strong>Students will demonstrate an understanding of dramatic inflections within Shakespeare by notating inflections on the Crispian Speech.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Copies of Crispian Speech\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Lesson-5.Crispian-Speech.doc\">Lesson 5.Crispian Speech<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hook <\/strong>: Inflections<\/p>\n<p>Draw four shapes on the board representing different inflections<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Upward \u2934<\/li>\n<li>Downward \u2935<\/li>\n<li>Sustained \u2192<\/li>\n<li>Caesura or Circumflex\udbc0\udc00<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After you draw them on the board, point to one and speak to the students, making sure all of your sentences end in that inflection.\u00a0 After a few minutes, let them guess what all of the different symbols mean.\u00a0 Have a brief discussion about why those different inflections would be important in theatre, especially Shakespeare.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Helps you know when thoughts are ending, when there is more, what is emphasized, and allows the actor to build tension.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let them try each vocal inflection, and have them repeat the sounds a few times until they have it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><em> Circumflex <\/em><\/strong>emphasis on a certain word. Ex. Mom! When you are whining.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em> Sustained <\/em><\/strong>makes you feel like there is more coming, no punctuation. Ex But&#8230;ummm&#8230; well\u2026.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em> Upward <\/em><\/strong><strong>Inflection <\/strong>change in pitch going from a lower to a higher note within the vowel. Means there is more to this. Examples: Raise the pitch at the end of these words, keeping in mind what they convey with a upward inflection. \u201cWow! Really?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong><em> Downward <\/em><\/strong><strong>Inflection <\/strong>This is when there is a change in pitch going from a higher to a lower note within the vowel. Most often, this change in pitch indicates confidence, finality, power and certainty.
