{"id":5216,"date":"2017-05-26T17:36:41","date_gmt":"2017-05-26T17:36:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=5216"},"modified":"2017-05-26T17:36:41","modified_gmt":"2017-05-26T17:36:41","slug":"choosing-stories-to-complement-the-theme","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=5216","title":{"rendered":"Choosing stories to complement the theme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lesson #2 \u2013 Choosing stories to complement the theme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVE:<\/p>\n<p>Students will demonstrate their understanding of the developed theme by bringing several children\u2019s stories to the table to be considered for the performance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MATERIALS NEEDED:<\/p>\n<p>Additional children\u2019s books for those students who do not do the homework<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HOOK:<\/p>\n<p>Ask students to hold the storybooks they brought over their heads.\u00a0 As the teacher calls student\u2019s name, have student shout out the name of their stories. Record points for students as you see and hear the name of the books.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>STEP ONE:<\/p>\n<p>Go back to the board and look at the theme.\u00a0 Divide the class up into smaller groups.\u00a0 Have students share the stories they brought in 30-60 seconds each.\u00a0 Together as a group discuss whether or not they think the story is the best fit with the theme. \u00a0Have them choose the best books that fit the theme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>STEP TWO:<\/p>\n<p>Narrow the options from each group down to a total of a few stories to read out loud as a class. Discuss the character and narrator roles.\u00a0 Discuss the message of each story.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>STEP THREE:<\/p>\n<p>Explain to the class what Process Drama is:\u00a0 <em>Dissecting a story or play, acting out scenarios that may be indicated but not part of the story.\u00a0 This process is for the actor only; it is not for an audience. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Have the class choose one of the stories brought to class to experience as a process drama in the future.\u00a0 Have each student come up with something they would like to do during the process \u2013 what are things that could be explored in this story?\u00a0 Write these ideas on the board.\u00a0 Later, the teacher can choose the appropriate activities to develop for the next class based on the ideas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>STEP FOUR:<\/p>\n<p>Each student must choose one story that he\/she will direct as part of the Children\u2019s Theatre production.\u00a0 The titles should be written down along with the director\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>CLOSURE:<\/p>\n<p>Discuss how knowing what story they each will be responsible for will enhance the process drama experience. Each student must type his story out so he\/she has a working copy to be written on, etc..
