{"id":4960,"date":"2017-05-08T19:53:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-08T19:53:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=4960"},"modified":"2017-05-08T19:53:46","modified_gmt":"2017-05-08T19:53:46","slug":"trailer-storyboarding","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=4960","title":{"rendered":"Trailer Storyboarding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Lesson 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trailer Storyboarding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students will demonstrate their understanding of movie trailer construction by analyzing movie trailers and developing a storyboard for their original movie trailer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials Needed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At least three trailers (one good for camera elements; two for revealing plot in some way)<\/p>\n<p><em>Big Hero 6<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8IdMPpKMdcc\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8IdMPpKMdcc<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Beauty and the Beast<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e3Nl_TCQXuw\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e3Nl_TCQXuw<\/a>;<\/p>\n<p><em>Fantastic Beasts<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VYZ3U1inHA4\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VYZ3U1inHA4<\/a>;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Nut Job 2<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LndBNooArwY\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LndBNooArwY<\/a>;<\/p>\n<p><em>Clue <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cDDdeHtrxfA\"><em>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cDDdeHtrxfA<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Movie Trailer Assignment info sheet copies<\/p>\n<p>Storyboard PowerPoint<\/p>\n<p>Storyboard Worksheet copies<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>PRE-HOOK:<\/p>\n<p>Collect all signed permission slips.\u00a0 Remind students that they must be in your hand tomorrow to begin filming.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HOOK:<\/p>\n<p>Have students pull out their camera elements worksheet (angles, movement, framing shots).\u00a0 Divide the class in thirds and assign each third either angles, movements, or framing shots.\u00a0 As they watch the trailer, have everyone in each group watch for their camera element and put a tick mark by each camera element used in the trailer (if a long shot is shown they should tick mark long shot, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After the trailer is over have the groups compare their answers.\u00a0 How come their answers differed (assuming that they did since every student didn\u2019t catch every element)?\u00a0 Why should audience members actually not consciously notice camera elements?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>REVIEW:<\/p>\n<p>Draw the plot structure graph on the board.\u00a0 Point to each point on the graph and have students review what the different elements of plot structure are: exposition, inciting incident, rising action, climax, and denouement.\u00a0 What things can be part of rising action \u2013 HOW does the plot keep building and rising?\u00a0 Answers can include: conflict, relationships developed, obstacles thrown in protagonist\u2019s way, more information shared, deeper objectives, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have students think on movie trailers that they have seen before movies or in commercials.\u00a0 Are there any trailers that tell the entire plot of the story in order?\u00a0 Have students share any that come up.\u00a0 If no one has any examples ask students why that is \u2013 why do film makers NOT put their plot in order in a trailer?\u00a0 What effect can putting the plot elements in a different order do for the audience member?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MODELING:<\/p>\n<p>Show two different trailers.\u00a0 After each one have students get into groups of 3-4 to discuss how the plot was demonstrated and manipulated in each trailer.\u00a0 What effect did this have on them \u2013 arouse curiosity?\u00a0 Leave a cliffhanger?\u00a0 Sympathize with a character? Etc.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>INSTRUCTION:<\/p>\n<p>Pass out the Movie Trailer Assignment information sheet.\u00a0 Go through the assignment together as a class.\u00a0 Highlight that they can create an entirely original movie trailer or they can recreate on film a movie trailer that already exists.\u00a0 All required camera elements must be used in the trailer.\u00a0 This assignment has a very tight timeline, so students need to use their time wisely and well to accomplish it successfully.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you have one, show an example of an original movie trailer from a previous student group.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of the assignments leading up to the Movie Trailer is a storyboard.\u00a0 What is a storyboard?
