{"id":4603,"date":"2016-02-18T16:27:10","date_gmt":"2016-02-18T16:27:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=4603"},"modified":"2016-02-18T16:27:10","modified_gmt":"2016-02-18T16:27:10","slug":"bridge-from-greek-to-romanwhy-we-should-care","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=4603","title":{"rendered":"Bridge from Greek to Roman\/Why we should care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Day 1: Bridge from Greek to Roman\/Why we should care<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> Students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of how prevalent Greek\/Roman culture is in our current day by finding as many mythological allusions in today\u2019s society as possible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials Needed:<\/strong> White board and markers, videos (search on Youtube): Harry Potter with Fluffy, Star Wars set to \u201cI need a Hero,\u201d Hercules Zero to Hero, Ben and Jerry\u2019s Greek frozen yogurt ad from their website, Venus commercial from the 90s, Greek god rap, Monty Python \u201cWhat have the Romans ever given us?\u201d Fruitsnacks for the winners<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hook<\/strong>: Have the words written up on the board<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are a lot of words in our everyday lives that are from Greek\/Roman origins:\n<ul>\n<li>Words: Titanic \u2013 titans, aphrodisiac &#8211; Aphrodite, Atlas \u2013 held up the earth, nowadays a map, Narcissus \u2013 Narcissism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>There are also tons of mythological allusions (do you guys know what an allusion is? It\u2019s a reference) in the movies: Show Harry Potter fluffy clip \u2013 Cerberus, Star Wars \u2013 the mythic hero, Hercules \u2013 Hercules\u2026<\/li>\n<li>In advertising: Greek ice cream commercial from Ben and Jerry\u2019s website &#8211; Zeus, the Venus commercial (the razors) \u2013 Venus\/Aphrodite<\/li>\n<li>In music: Venus by Bananorama<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Making Connections:<\/strong> list as many other mythological references you can think of<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After 20 minutes, ask how many they found. Read over their lists to make sure they are correct, then declare a winner by the group with the most correct connections and give them fruitsnacks<\/li>\n<li>Discussion: Why do you think we have so many allusions to Greek and Roman mythology in our current culture? Why should we care?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lecture: Rome <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start with video of Rome from Monty Python (what have the Romans ever given us?)\n<ul>\n<li>What have the Romans given us? Besides our culture, like we just talked about.\n<ul>\n<li>Possible answers: The aquaduct, sanitation, order.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Greek god rap \u2013 they stole everything from the Greeks, including their gods. This video will show you the gods again in the silliest way possible\u2026\n<ul>\n<li>Zeus = Jupiter<\/li>\n<li>Hera = Juno<\/li>\n<li>Aphrodite = Venus<\/li>\n<li>Dionysus = Bacchus<\/li>\n<li>Poseidon = Neptune<\/li>\n<li>Cronos = Saturn<\/li>\n<li>Hades = Pluto<\/li>\n<li>Hephaestus = Vulcan<\/li>\n<li>Demeter = Ceres<\/li>\n<li>Apollo = Apollo<\/li>\n<li>Athena = Minerva<\/li>\n<li>Artemis = Diana<\/li>\n<li>Ares = Mars<\/li>\n<li>Hermes = Mercury<\/li>\n<li>Eros = Cupid<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Although ancient Greece and ancient Rome were incredibly similar, Roman theatre was notably different than Greek.
