{"id":4590,"date":"2016-02-17T21:30:24","date_gmt":"2016-02-17T21:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=4590"},"modified":"2021-04-24T05:44:58","modified_gmt":"2021-04-24T05:44:58","slug":"tactics-and-objectives","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=4590","title":{"rendered":"Tactics and Objectives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>LESSON 4-Tactics and Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Educational Objective: <\/strong>Students will demonstrate their understanding of objectives and tactics by identifying an objective (I want [person] to [action]) and choosing 3 tactics they will use for their character in their assigned scenes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Supplies Needed:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bag of candy<\/li>\n<li>Tactic list\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Lesson-4.Tactics-List.docx\">Lesson 4.Tactics List<\/a><\/li>\n<li>School room scene clip from <em>Anne of Green Gables<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Objectives\/ Tactics homework sheet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Lesson-4.Objectives-and-Tactics-Worksheet.docx\">Lesson 4.Objectives and Tactics Worksheet<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hook:<\/strong> Have a large bowl or bag of candy sitting on the table as they walk in.\u00a0 (They should naturally be excited to see a treat!)\u00a0 Take one piece of candy in your hand and explain that one student may have the chance to get this from you.\u00a0 Pick a student and tell them to try to get it from you.\u00a0 Their first natural tactic may be to ask for it, or grab it from your hand.\u00a0 YOU CANNOT LET THEM GET IT ON THE FIRST TRY.\u00a0 After each try, say \u201ctry again\u201d or \u201cthat way didn\u2019t work, so pick a new way\u201d.\u00a0 Let them do 3 different things to try and get it and then finally give in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Explain that the student\u2019s objective or desired action (outcome) could be stated like, \u201cI want [teacher name] to give me the candy bar.\u201d\u00a0 The different ways in which the student tried to get that to happen are called tactics.\u00a0 Make sure they understand that objectives and tactics are used in everyday life.\u00a0 Whenever we have a goal, we also decide on a tactic to help us accomplish it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Help them identify objectives and tactics in their own life by asking them the following: What are some objectives you see at school?\u00a0 Home?\u00a0 What are some things you want frequently? (as they share ideas, make a list of objectives on the board)\u00a0 Ask them: What are some tactics that people at home or at school use or could use to get what they want?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Explain that tactics are often described as things we do <em>to <\/em>the other person; like to flatter or shame.\u00a0 Hand out a tactic list and have them skim through looking for tactics that they have seen used at school, home, etc.\u00a0 <em>see Supplements<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong> If our tactic does not work the first time, then we naturally try another.\u00a0 Our goal as actors is to make sure that our characters use multiple tactics to keep the scene interesting.\u00a0 Ask them to write down the objective and at least 2 tactics that are used in the clip from <em>Anne of Green Gables. <\/em>We want to find what kind of tactics he uses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4:<\/strong> Discuss what tactics and objectives they saw in the scene.\u00a0 How did you know when he switched tactics? (his were mostly physical tactics, so it\u2019s easier to see when he changed)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have the students play \u201cVery Serious Matter\u201d.\u00a0 This is where everyone sits in a circle and one person stands inside.\u00a0 The person in the center must pick one person sitting in the circle and say to them \u201cthis is a very serious matter\u201d using different tactics until the person they\u2019re speaking to begins to laugh. In essence, the Objective of anyone standing inside the circle is \u201cI want [name] to break into laughter\u201d. Allow them to have their tactic lists with them to get ideas before it\u2019s their turn.\u00a0 If they can break the other person they can get a piece of candy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6:<\/strong> Explain that they have now heard the same line (\u201cthis is a very serious matter\u201d) said with many different tactics and in many different ways.\u00a0 Not all the tactics that were used in the circle may be appropriate for their scene, but this should help them get ideas of tactics they could use.\u00a0 Instruct them to work with their scene partners and decide what each character wants from the other.\u00a0 Have them also work together to brainstorm at least 3 different tactics each person will use in the scene to get what they want.\u00a0 (about 10 minutes?)\u00a0 They will turn in this paper for points as an assessment.\u00a0 The objective should be stated as \u201cI want [person] to [action]\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;-The objective and tactics chosen should be written on their character Facebook profile page and also on the objective\/ tactics sheet that they will turn in. <em>this allows all their character work to be on one page<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 8:<\/strong>\u00a0 If any of them do not finish this in class, then their homework is to finish the homework sheet <em>see Supplements<\/em>. And all of them should be practicing their tactics at home as they rehearse.
