{"id":4229,"date":"2015-06-08T17:11:41","date_gmt":"2015-06-08T17:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=4229"},"modified":"2015-06-08T17:11:41","modified_gmt":"2015-06-08T17:11:41","slug":"lesson-5-body-movements-and-dance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=4229","title":{"rendered":"Lesson 5: Body Movements and Dance"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Objective<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Students will demonstrate and understanding of body movements and dance steps for musical theatre by performing a simple choreographed dance that will give them ideas for their final performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Materials Needed<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>DVD or video player and television, camera to record students dancing, DVD or video of\u00a0<em>Cats<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Singing in the Rain<\/em>, CD player, CD with the song \u201cOne Singular Sensation\u201d from\u00a0<em>Chorus Line<\/em>,<\/p>\n<p>Video or DVD of non-professionals doing a poor job of body movements in a musical if available from past performances, and top hats.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Lesson Directions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Anticipatory Set\/Hook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If possible show a video or DVD of some kids performing a musical number poorly, if this is not possible then act out poor body movements and such.\u00a0\u00a0Point out because of the bad body movements and dance this did not come across well.\u00a0\u00a0Now show professionals dancing in\u00a0<em>Cats<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Singing in the Rain<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Instruction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Transition:\u00a0\u00a0Discuss how body movement and dance is so important in musical theatre.\u00a0\u00a0Talk about movements needing to be complete, crisp, and sharp.\u00a0\u00a0Discuss that just as we learned that the voice is a tool in theatre, so is the body.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Modeling:\u00a0\u00a0The teacher can now show the students simple dance steps to the song \u201cOne Singular Sensation\u201d from\u00a0<em>Chorus Line<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Directions:\u00a0\u00a0The teacher now instructs the students that they will be learning these simple steps and other body movements and performing them at the end of the class.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Instruction:\u00a0\u00a0The teacher (or have a dance teacher come in) instructs the students in body warm ups and then into choreographed dance steps.
