the Scribe; and the Spokesperson.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Have each person tape their responsibility label to their shirt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5&#8211;<\/strong>Place the Question transparency (What is a director?) on the overhead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have each group discuss the question\u00a0<em>(which is led by the discussion leader)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Notate their ideas and conclusions\u00a0<em>(written by the scribe<\/em>).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Give the students 3-5 minutes to come up with their answers.<\/li>\n<li>Have each Spokesperson stand and present his\/her group\u2019s ideas and answers to the rest of the class.<\/li>\n<li>Write the different ideas on the board, placing a check next to repeated ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Discuss each idea as a class<\/li>\n<li>Guide the class to a consensus that correlates with the handout\u2019s definition.\u00a0\u00a0Bring out the impact of a director\u2019s concept, including the following ideas :\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It defines how to stage the play.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It is a framework around which the production can be structured so that it says something<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It determines setting, lighting, costumes, characterization, moves &#8211; everything.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It helps actors develop a movement vocabulary which expresses this and it will permeate every aspect of the production.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The production concept informs every aspect of the production: Without it, the actors are just going through the motions \u2013 signifying nothing!<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Without it, the designers do not have a united purpose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Check for understanding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6\u2014<em>Repeat Step 4 for the question: What is the Director\u2019s Concept?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 7\u2014<\/strong>Discussion:\u00a0\u00a0Remind students that each of them will be the director of their chosen scene from Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do each of you have to have the same concept for your production book?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Why?\u00a0\u00a0Why not?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0So what?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0If that&#8217;s how you see the play, what difference does it make? The\u00a0\u00a0 words are still the same; you can&#8217;t change them; so what&#8217;s the point?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Explain:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0There must be almost as many different ways to approach directing a show as there are directors! Everything depends upon the personality and &#8211; to an extent &#8211; the experience of the director concerned. Some have everything worked out in detail before they get to the first reading, others work totally off the tops of their heads, and there are all stages in-between.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 8&#8211;<\/strong>Show the different director\u2019s concepts of Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream.\u00a0\u00a0Teacher may determine whether to show the all or some of the Power Point, transparencies, and website concepts, just a few from each, or only use one resource for the discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Ask:\u00a0\u00a0How are the director\u2019s concepts different for these productions different?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 9\u2014Instruction:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Plan the concept of the production very carefully.\u00a0\u00a0Show the Process of Creating a Director\u2019s Concept transparency<\/p>\n<p>Consider the following:<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What is the theme?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What is the message you want to the audience to leave the performance with?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How will the production be played?\u00a0\u00a0Why?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What is the tone of the play?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What is the mood?\u00a0\u00a0How will that be conveyed?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How will it affect the lighting?\u00a0\u00a0The set design?\u00a0\u00a0The costumes?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What kind of pictures do you want for key moments in the play?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The pattern of the play \u2013 its major elements &#8212; structure.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How do the characters function in the play?\u00a0<br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What are the demands on the actor?\u00a0<br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What are the technical demands \/ requirements?
