Directions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Anticipatory Set\/Hook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have desks\/chairs set up in semi-circle around the board.\u00a0\u00a0Have students sit in an open area.\u00a0\u00a0Call for volunteers to build a pyramid with their bodies.\u00a0(This can also be done with blocks on a table.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Instruction<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong>\u2014Transition:\u00a0\u00a0Ask the students:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What do we have to do to create a pyramid?\u00a0\u00a0(work as a team)<\/p>\n<p>Ask:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Who would they take out of the pyramid?\u00a0\u00a0(Take that person off)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Why did you make that choice?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Why don\u2019t we take __(name someone on the bottom level)__ out of the pyramid?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Are you telling me that some people are indispensable?\u00a0\u00a0Why?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Shall we try to take ____________ out of the pyramid?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What happens?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2\u2014<\/strong>Carefully break down the pyramid, starting with the top person, then the side person on the next level.\u00a0\u00a0Continue down one side to the first base person.\u00a0\u00a0A pyramid needs to remain until you are down to a 3-person pyramid.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How does this exercise relate to theatre?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3\u2014Transition:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Have the students sit in their desks.\u00a0\u00a0Who can tell me what a team sport is?<\/p>\n<p><em>(Write down the students answers on the board.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Select a sport you know and understand.\u00a0\u00a0Talk about the members of the team and what they do.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Is theatre a team sport?\u00a0\u00a0How?\u00a0\u00a0(Different people do different parts of the needed technical theatre for a play.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Who are those people on the theatre team?\u00a0\u00a0(director, producer, actor, set designer, costume designer, lighting designer\/crew, stage manager, stage crew, prop master, etc.)\u00a0\u00a0Write the students answers on the board.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 4\u2014 Instruction:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Using the overhead projector and screen, show complex Production Team transparency.\u00a0\u00a0Explain that most professional theatre production companies are organized like this chart.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explain<\/strong>\u00a0that we are going to be working on a simpler organizational chart.\u00a0\u00a0Put up the blank Production Team Chart transparency and hand out copies of the blank Production Team Chart for students to notate information as it is written on the transparency with transparency markers.\u00a0\u00a0Introduce the hierarchy of the production team.\u00a0\u00a0If possible, get the students to volunteer as much information as possible\u2014positions and responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explain:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Information on the chart and the Responsibilities handout will be on the unit test.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5\u2014Explain:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Different programs have some differences in their production team.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>What kind of theatre programs can you think of?\u00a0\u00a0<em>(Professional\/Broadway; community;\u00a0college; high school)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Why do you think they are different?\u00a0\u00a0How?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 6\u2014Transition:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s experiment a little.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Have the students get out of their chairs and stand in a circle.\u00a0\u00a0Ask for a volunteer to go into the center of the circle.\u00a0Volunteer needs to cross his\/her arms across the chest, close eyes.\u00a0\u00a0The people in the circle close in ranks so they are shoulder to shoulder with hands\u00a0\u00a0up near chest ready to catch the center person who keeps his\/her body stiff and falls back.\u00a0\u00a0The others push the center person back and forth and around in circles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 7\u2014<\/strong>Stop the action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0How does this game relate to what we have been talking about?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Do you think it can be done with fewer people?<\/p>\n<p>Have several people step outside the circle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 8\u2014<\/strong>Repeat the action in step 6 several times until the circle only contains 3 people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 9\u2014<\/strong>Not all programs have a full production team.\u00a0\u00a0Discuss the process of production at your school.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 10\u2014<\/strong>Tell the students that we will be learning about Theatrical production teams.\u00a0\u00a0Explain expectations:\u00a0\u00a0Learning about several members of the team and what they do.\u00a0\u00a0We will actually do some of the things that some of the team members have to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explain:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0We will be creating a Production Book (portfolio) similar to this.\u00a0\u00a0Show Director\u2019s Book.\u00a0\u00a0Show and explain the different parts of the book, letting students see specific things that will be included in their Production Book.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Hand out and discuss the criteria of the Production Book.\u00a0\u00a0Answer all questions.
