{"id":196,"date":"2015-02-04T17:53:30","date_gmt":"2015-02-04T17:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tedb-wp.byu.edu\/?page_id=196"},"modified":"2015-05-15T20:09:33","modified_gmt":"2015-05-15T20:09:33","slug":"lesson-3-aging-with-latex","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/?page_id=196","title":{"rendered":"Lesson 3: Aging with Latex"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>OBJECTIVE: \u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Students will show an ability to apply old age makeup by creating a step by step design, shaping latex, and applying it to themselves or a partner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>MATERIALS NEEDED:<\/h4>\n<p>Enough makeup for each student<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Copies of Makeup Design Sheet for each student (see Lesson 1 Supplements)<\/li>\n<li>Facial cleanser and towels for each student<\/li>\n<li>Makeup Morgue<\/li>\n<li>Enough brushes and sponges for each student<\/li>\n<li>Makeup room key<\/li>\n<li>Mirror or a volunteer for demonstration<\/li>\n<li>Enough latex, putty, wax, and\/or gelatin for each student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>HOOK:\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Review with the students what they learned last time.\u00a0 How do we alter basic corrective makeup to produce the effect of aging someone?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>PRESENTATION:<\/h4>\n<p>Transition<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Remind the class that today we will be using different materials to help us produce effects for old age.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Ask the students to head to the makeup room with their partners, and help carry some of the materials if needed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instruction\/Checking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Show the class some nose putty.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explain that nose putty is often used to reshape the rigid area of the nose.\u00a0 This substance does not adhere well to areas of the skin that are soft or mobile.<\/li>\n<li>It is usually applied by degreasing an area of the skin and covering the area in spirit gum.<\/li>\n<li>Be sure to mention that many people are allergic to some of the substances that we will be using.\u00a0 If at any time you feel a burning sensation while applying these substances, stop immediately and remove the substance.\u00a0 Let the teacher know, and we will come up with an alternative.<\/li>\n<li>What is nose putty used for?<\/li>\n<li>Why?<\/li>\n<li>How is it used?<\/li>\n<li>What do you do if you start feeling a burning or severe itching sensation?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Follow the same process to explain how to use derma wax.\u00a0 It is like putty, but it is more difficult to manage and adhere.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Continue to explain how to use gelatin.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gelatin can be found at nearly any grocer.<\/li>\n<li>It can be adhered in a similar fashion, but requires a 1 to 1 ratio of gelatin to water.\u00a0 It also dries quickly, so it must be shaped swiftly.<\/li>\n<li>It can be adhered to softer and more mobile tissue if applied in layers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Finally, explain how to use latex.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Latex is great for creating wrinkles, scars, bumps, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Usually applied in layers.<\/li>\n<li>If the layers are applied too loosely, the latex will flake instead of wrinkle, so be very careful or you may have to start over.<\/li>\n<li>This is the most difficult of the aging materials to work with in my opinion.<\/li>\n<li>Remember to check for understanding by asking similar questions to the ones above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Directions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Tell the students to look at their designs that they had brought with them today.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask them what types of aging materials they could use on their design.<\/li>\n<li>Have them alter their designs a little if need be to include at least one of the types of aging materials.<\/li>\n<li>Have them complete the worksheet by filling in the steps to carry out the application of the design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Guided Practice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 If time allows, have the students apply their designs to their partners.<\/p>\n<p>o\u00a0\u00a0 Remember to check individual student work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>CLOSURE:\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>Ask a student who has been aged to volunteer to dummy for the class.\u00a0 Have the class review by critiquing the application together.\u00a0 What looks good?\u00a0 What could be improved?\u00a0 How was this applied?\u00a0 Etc.\u00a0 Then ask the students to clean up and dismiss the class when ready.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>ASSESSMENT:\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>The old age design sheet has a proficiency of 20\/25, and participation for the day is 8\/10.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>SUPPLEMENTS:\u00a0<\/h4>\n<p>(see Lesson 1)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OBJECTIVE: \u00a0 Students will show an ability to apply old age makeup by creating a step by step design, shaping latex, and applying it to themselves or a partner. &nbsp;
