Endowment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Objective<\/h4>\n<p>Students will demonstrate their understanding of Uta Hagen\u2019s Endowment exercise by rehearsing and performing the exercise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Materials Needed<\/h4>\n<p>\u00b7 Respect for Acting by Uta Hagen<br \/> \u00b7 Random objects<br \/> \u00b7 A medium-size piece of cloth per student<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Lesson Directions<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Anticipatory Set\/Hook<\/h5>\n<p>Play the game This is a What?<br \/> How to play: Stand in a circle. Whoever goes first will manipulate a random object into something it is not. As they are performing this task, they will say \u201cThis is a (recreated object)\u201d. The rest of the group will respond with \u201ca what?\u201d. The originator will repeat the object\u2019s name, with the same response from the group: \u201ca what?\u201d. The originator will identify the object\u2019s name once more and the group will response with an \u201cohhh, a (recreated object)\u201d. Repeat this process, allowing someone else to change the object into something else, etc.<br \/> For example:<br \/> A: (while rocking a piece of cloth) This is a baby.<br \/> B-Z: a what?<br \/> A: (still rocking the cloth) A baby.<br \/> B-Z: a what?<br \/> A: (rocking) A baby.<br \/> B-Z: Ooohhh, a baby.<br \/> (Next person)<br \/> B: (while rubbing the same piece of cloth on his face) This is a face towel.<br \/> A, C-Z: a what?<br \/> B: (continuing action) A face towel.<br \/> A, C-Z: a what?<br \/> B: A face towel.<br \/> A, C-Z: Ohhhh, a face towel.<br \/> ETC.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Instruction<\/h5>\n<p>Step 1:<br \/> \u00b7 As a class, read Uta Hagen\u2019s Respect for Acting, pages 112-117.<br \/> \u00b7 Throughout the reading, refer back to the hook and periodically asks students<br \/> o to summarize what they\u2019ve read<br \/> o for examples from productions they\u2019ve seen<br \/> o for personal experiences they\u2019ve had<\/p>\n<p>GOAL: Students will have an understanding of<br \/> 1. the exercise<br \/> 2. important elements to successfully executing the exercise (e.g. avoid pantomiming, being specific in choices, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Step 2:<br \/> \u00b7 Pass out a cloth to each student<br \/> \u00b7 Inform them that they are going to reenact their nightly chores (for about 90 secs); however, they must manipulate the piece of cloth into 3 different props they would use during this routine (For example, the cloth becomes a toothbrush, face towel, and blanket)<br \/> \u00b7 Give them 10-15 minutes to decide and rehearse the exercise<br \/> NOTE: Encourage students to be detailed in their interactions with the cloth so viewers know exactly what the prop is<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Step 3:<br \/> \u00b7 Once students have had sufficient time to practice, begin performing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>CLOSURE:<\/h4>\n<p>Once everyone has performed, discuss their process in doing this exercise (Possible questions: what did this exercise do for you? How did it help you?
