The Fourth Wall"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Objective<\/h4>\n<p>Students will demonstrate their understanding of Uta Hagen\u2019s The Fourth Wall exercise by performing a rehearsed telephone conversation, illustrating the function of the secondary fourth wall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Materials Needed<\/h4>\n<p>\u00b7 Respect for Acting by Uta Hagen<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Lesson Directions<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Anticipatory Set\/Hook<\/h5>\n<p>Review the previous 3 exercises students have participated in (The Basic Object Exercises, Three Entrances, Immediacy). Ask them to identify what they were and what they did. (Review pages 91-105 and previous lesson plans for exercises and descriptions.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Instruction<\/h5>\n<p>Step 1:<br \/> \u00b7 As a class, read Uta Hagen\u2019s Respect for Acting, pages 106-111.<br \/> \u00b7 Throughout the reading, periodically asks students<br \/> o to summarize what they\u2019ve read<br \/> o for examples from productions they\u2019ve seen<br \/> o for personal experiences they\u2019ve had<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GOAL: Students will have an understanding of<br \/> 1. the fourth wall as a primary function<br \/> 2. the fourth wall as a secondary function<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Step 2:<br \/> \u00b7 Have students find a partner they haven\u2019t worked with while doing the previous exercises<br \/> \u00b7 Inform them that they are going to create a telephone conversation between the two of them (page 110), deciding the:<br \/> \u00fc Time<br \/> \u00fc Place<br \/> \u00fc Circumstances<br \/> \u00fc Objects<br \/> \u00fc Objectives<br \/> \u00b7 Once they have determined the situation, have them sufficiently rehearse a resulting dialogue so they do not need to improvise the conversation<br \/> \u00b7 As soon as the conversation has been solidified, have students work on interacting with the \u201csecondary fourth wall\u201d (i.e. as they are talking on the phone, they need to be aware that there is a fourth wall; however, the moment they directly acknowledge an imaginary object on\/against their fourth wall, it has become a primary fourth wall\u2014which they want to avoid)<br \/> \u00b7 Give them 10-15 minutes to create\/rehearse this activity<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Step 3:<br \/> \u00b7 Once students have had sufficient time to practice, begin performing.<br \/> \u00b7 To performers: encourage them to maintain a secondary 4th wall<br \/> \u00b7 To viewers: see if they notice when the fourth wall becomes primary instead of secondary<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GOAL: Students will<br \/> 1. Be able to incorporate this exercise so that they feel \u201crelieved of the old agonizing burden of audience intrusion\u201d (Hagen, 111)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>CLOSURE:<\/h5>\n<p>Once everyone has performed, discuss their process in doing this exercise (Possible questions: what did this exercise do for you? How did it help you?
