A Designer&#8217;s Duties"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Objective<\/h4>\n<p>The students will demonstrate their understanding of a designer\u2019s tasks by taking a short quiz.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Materials Needed<\/h4>\n<p>Props that refer to things a designer needs (i.e. color swatches, graph paper, pencil, ruler, fabric swatches, stage diagrams, toy furniture, etc.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tedb-old.byu.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Designers-Quiz-and-Quiz-Key.Lesson-1.doc\">Designers Quiz and Quiz Key<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Lesson Directions<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Anticipatory Set\/Hook<\/h5>\n<p>Have different props sitting on a table in front of the class that would identify different aspects of a designer\u2019s duties. Have some students come up and grab a prop each. Then they have to say what they think it would be used for. The class then has to decide what order they think the tasks would go in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Instruction<\/h5>\n<p>Step 1: What are the basic steps of a set designer? Write these on the board.<br \/> \u2022 Read the script<br \/> \u2022 Talk to the Director about the concept<br \/> \u2022 Do research<br \/> \u2022 Consider the budget and available stock<br \/> \u2022 Choose colors, fabrics, patterns and furniture<br \/> \u2022 Measure the space and furniture<br \/> \u2022 Create a rough sketch floor plan<br \/> \u2022 Talk to the director again<br \/> \u2022 Make changes<br \/> \u2022 Do final design<br \/> Explain to the students that this is similar to what they will be doing throughout this unit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Step 2: What are things the designer needs to know before they can design a set?<br \/> \u2022 Size\/shape of Auditorium<br \/> \u2022 Space<br \/> \u2022 Available stock<br \/> \u2022 Special units needed<br \/> \u2022 Lighting<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Step 3: Ask the class the following questions: Why do we use scenery? What are the purposes of scenery? What can scenery illustrate to the audience? Some possible answers may be the following:<br \/> \u2022 To help the actors<br \/> \u2022 To help the audience know the time period, genre, location, and about the characters<br \/> \u2022 To create a mood, etc.<br \/> Any logical answers referring to how scenery may be used are valid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Assessment<\/h4>\n<p>Erase the board, review the above information and then hand out a quiz. This quiz should be used as an assessment of what the students just learned.
